Debi van Zyl is a freelance designer based in Smithville, Texas, in the countryside outside Austin. Trained as an architect, her work focuses largely on exhibit and graphic design, furniture, and installations for museums and cultural institutions. She also designs printed matter, such as books, exhibit catalogs and brochures, and environmental signage.
After having worked and lived in Los Angeles for over 16 years, the opportunity came to move to the countryside in 2015. Debi now splits her time between the city and the country, working remotely as well as commuting to clients throughout the United States. She runs her design studio out of the small farm house she shares with her husband and two cats on a little chunk of land surrounded by wildflowers, longhorn cattle,
a donkey, and Post Oak trees.
Debi started making and selling knitted creatures (Beasts) in 2006 and continues to run her online shop stocked with these knitted oddities and other products she designs and fabricates.
