Debi van Zyl is a freelance designer based in Bastrop, Texas, in the woods outside Austin. Trained as an architect, her work focuses on exhibit and graphic design, furniture, and installations for museums and cultural institutions, including printed matter such as books and catalogs. Her work often incorporates surprising textile and textural elements, combining a personal passion of sewing and knitting and a healthy obsession with raw materials, with a professional passion of fostering curiosity and creating narrative spaces.
After having worked and lived in Los Angeles for over 16 years, the opportunity came to move to the countryside in 2015. Debi now splits her time between the city and the country, working remotely as well as commuting to clients throughout the United States. She runs her design studio out of a blue house she shares with her husband, two cats, and infant daughter.
Debi started making and selling knitted creatures (Beasts) in 2006 and continues to run her online shop stocked with these knitted oddities and other products she designs and fabricates.
